nIGHTVEIL (2023)
What is "Nightveil?"
This piece is a mock title sequence for "Nightveil", an imagined Fast & Furious-style show about LA street racing. I knew from the start that I wanted it to feature quick cuts of someone shifting gears and hitting the pedal into a drift. It's always my favorite part of cinematic chase scenes.
Funnily enough, I came up with the visual direction after getting the Monsters Inc theme stuck in my head. It led me to research more about Monsters Inc's jazzy modernist title sequence, which I likened to the works of Saul Bass, which lead me to the classic 007 sequences of Maurice Binder. Cowboy Bebop does an amazing job fusing the mid-20th century modernist style with gritty space bounty hunters, which I found aligned amazingly with the energy I was going for.
Finding the right music was a huge part of my process. I couldn't start without the right music first. Ultimately, I chose a track which described itself as "electric mambo", which gives a kind of Latin American vibe that doesn't feel out-of-place in a story about Los Angeles street culture.
"Nightveil" starts off with tight, close-up car shots, progressively getting wider over time, until it ends with a reveal the LA skyline. I through in some nods to car culture, such as the Little Trees air freshener, the traction control OFF light, and those classic flip up headlights.
The exhaust also backfires in sync with the soundtrack.
If I were to continue this project in the future, I would design a "Nightveil" title card at the end in a typographic style consistent with the rest of the sequence.
